The phenomenology of religion has uneven relationships to philosophical phenomenology and social-scientific research. Descriptive, analytic, and social phenomenological approaches can be distinguished as ideal types. Descriptive phenomenology elides the philosophical distinction between existence and appearances, thereby bypassing issues of ontology and epistemology. Nevertheless, historical and ethnographic descriptions have been important to the development of the two other approaches, and they yield substantive studies of religion. Analytic phenomenology encompasses structural, hermeneutic, and formal possibilities. Formal phenomenology and Sch├╝tz’s lifeworldly extension clarified the basis for a social phenomenology of religion, both on a general basis and in comparative and historical phenomenology.
